Resting up for the night flight

I departed Banda Aceh for Kuala Lumpur after midday. On the way to Banda Aceh airport I noticed a woman with a very short skirt on her motorbike. I queried the taxi driver if she would get in trouble ... he replied to the negative, as she was Chinese and not a Muslim.

I think while the extreme position in Aceh allows for stoning, televised whipping etc, the reality isn't too different from the neighbouring provinces or countries.

In Kuala Lumpur, I had managed to prebook a hotel room for USD0.30 within walking distance to the airport. It was cheap enough to use as a day room and check out in time for my flight at 1:20 am to Melbourne.

Unfortunately at Melbourne I won't have such a luxury while I wait about 7 hours for my connection to Auckland.

The last five weeks have just flown past ... on thing that's for sure is that I'll be planning my next adventure shortly!

Nightstop

I left a family dinner a little early to catch my flight to KL departing at 9:50pm. I was very fortunate to have been able to see my brother-in-law visiting from the UK.

Walking through the tarmac at KL Airport (LCC or Budget Terminal) at midnight offered a different insight as nearly all AirAsia's red birds come home to roost. Instead of the usual hive of activity, one gets to see nearly all their fleet in one place.

I walked to the nearby Tune Hotel for my nightstop.

How to bring down a ginormous bridge by spitting

I read in the paper that the Howrah Brigdge in Kolkata (Calcutta) which spans the mighty Hooghly River is at risk of failure from corrosion. While the metal cantilever structure was designed to withstand nearly anything, the engineers missed one possibility ... that the hordes of people crossing it daily would spit on it. And it wouldn't be just regular spit ... but spit with betel nut, powdered lime (the calcium compound), tannin and compound etc which becomes an acidic cocktail.

Always gotta expect the unexpected!

Time with family

It was an early start at 4:30am to catch the 8:15am flight to KL with a four hour connection to Kuching [Kuching-travel-guide-1096915]. My favourite airline does not offer connections (to minimise liability and to keep fares low) ... so one has to allow extra time in case of delays (seems to be rather rare in my personal experience).

I arrived in Kuching before 9pm ... so it was a long day ... but not quite as bad as it sounds as I lost 2.5h due to the time change.

Killing a day after a near-sleepless night flight

My AUD35 flight departed Melbourne on time. AirAsia and AirAsia X, being really cheap airlines attract first time flyers and people who are travelling internationally for the first time. I overheard the man in front of me ask the man next to him ... "This place where we're landing in ... what country is that in? I'm only connecting to go to Thailand." Just can't help overhearing things as the Airbus A330 is so freakily quiet.

8.5 hours later (with about 3 hours of dozing) I arrived at Kuala Lumpur [Kuala-Lumpur-travel-guide-1096867] around 7am. It was too early to check-in so I left my bags and took the bus into the city and made my way by monorail to my favourite haunts.

Firstly to Sungei Wang and Bukit Bintang Plaza, for blind reflexology and massage ... but it was a bit too early. So had lunch at the superposh mall Pavilion before returning to see my blind masseur.

It was early to bed tonight, at the cheap Tune Hotel by the airport, to make up for the night flight.
